Shelf lighting should make products easier to see without drawing attention to the light source. The best solution depends on the shelf construction, product height, viewer position and the desired balance between brightness and atmosphere.
Common lighting approaches
Edge-lit and light guide shelves
The shelf itself becomes the illuminated surface. This can produce a clean look with no separate visible light bar. It is often used in premium retail, cosmetics, jewellery and consumer-electronics display environments.
Linear LED profiles
A profile above, below or behind the shelf directs light toward the products. This is flexible for projects that require adjustable positioning, but the profile, cable route and glare control must be designed together.
COB LED strips
Continuous COB strip can create a smooth line of light without clearly visible LED dots. It works well where concealed strip lighting is required, provided the thermal and installation conditions are suitable.
What to specify
- Shelf length, depth, height and material
- Distance between shelves
- Product size, finish and colour
- Typical customer viewing distance
- Target CCT, CRI and brightness
- Acrylic, aluminium profile or recessed installation
- Power location, connectors and service access
- Sample, rollout quantity and delivery schedule
Pushing brightness higher can reveal hot spots or make the display uncomfortable to view. A useful sample balances brightness, uniformity and product colour rendition rather than maximising one number.
Installation and maintenance
Plan access for drivers, connectors and cable terminations before finalising the fixture. Also confirm that heat can escape from the LED assembly. If a shelf must be removed for store maintenance, choose a connector and mounting method that supports that routine.
Sample checklist
- Check product colour under the proposed CRI and CCT.
- Confirm that no LEDs are directly visible.
- Inspect the shelf at normal customer eye height.
- Review edge brightness and corner uniformity.
- Test the connector under realistic installation conditions.
