The visible result depends on the distance between the LEDs and the diffuser, the type of diffuser, the printed graphic, the box depth, the surrounding brightness and the direction from which people view the sign. <\/p>\n<h2>Start with the finished appearance<\/h2>\n<p> Define what the illuminated face should look like before selecting an LED layout. A light box used for a shop sign at several metres may tolerate a different optical arrangement from a compact menu box viewed at arm\u2019s length. Close viewing makes hot spots, colour variation, shadows and edge brightness easier to see. <\/p>\n<p> Record the target colour temperature, brightness and CRI together with the graphic material. Warm white, neutral white and cool white can change the appearance of skin tones, food, cosmetics, metal and printed brand colours. The diffuser and print also affect the delivered colour. <\/p>\n<h2>Three common backlighting approaches<\/h2>\n<h3>Edge-lit light guide<\/h3>\n<p> LEDs enter a clear acrylic light guide from one or more sides. This can produce a thin illuminated panel with the LED hardware moved to the perimeter. It is useful for compact displays, shelves and clean-faced signs where the light source should remain hidden. <\/p>\n<h3>Rigid LED bars<\/h3>\n<p> Rigid backlight bars are arranged behind the diffuser at planned intervals. The spacing, beam angle, distance to the diffuser and power layout determine uniformity. This approach can suit larger light boxes and constructions where modules need planned service access. <\/p>\n<h3>Flexible LED sheet<\/h3>\n<p> A dense LED sheet spreads many light sources across a broad area and can be cut to follow a drawing. It may be considered for translucent stone, irregular outlines and shallow backlit surfaces where a flexible light-source pattern is useful. <\/p>\n<h2>Why depth matters<\/h2>\n<p> The space between the LED and diffuser allows light to spread before it reaches the visible face. Reducing that distance can make individual LEDs more apparent, increase local bright areas and reduce tolerance for small assembly errors. A more diffusing material may hide hotspots, but it can also reduce output and change the graphic appearance. <\/p>\n<p> Do not decide the box depth from the frame design alone. Review the LED pitch, diffuser type, overall light-box size and required viewing distance together. The smallest possible box is not always the most economical or visually reliable design. <\/p>\n<h2>Control reflections and shadows<\/h2>\n<p> Internal surfaces should be considered as part of the optical system. A reflective or white internal finish can improve efficiency and uniformity, but it can also create unwanted patterns.
